The Fostering Process
Starting your fostering journey can feel like a big step, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. The fostering process is designed to make sure you’re fully prepared, well supported, and confident in your decision to care for a child.
At Match Foster Care, we’ll guide you through each stage — from your very first enquiry to welcoming your first child into your home. With open communication, training, and continuous support, we make the process straightforward, transparent, and positive.
How do I start the fostering process?
The first step is simply to get in touch with Match Foster Care. You can call us or complete our online enquiry form. A friendly member of our team will answer your initial questions and help you decide whether fostering could be the right path for you. There’s no pressure — just honest, helpful advice.
What happens after I enquire?
Once you’ve made an enquiry, we’ll arrange an informal home visit if you would like one. This gives you a chance to find out more about fostering and allows us to learn a little about you, your family, and your home environment. It’s a relaxed conversation, not an inspection — our goal is to make you feel comfortable and informed.
What is the initial home visit?
During the home visit, one of our managers will spend time getting to know you and discussing your motivation to foster. They’ll look at practical things such as your available space, lifestyle, and support network. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask any questions and explore what fostering might look like for your family.
What is the assessment process?
If you decide to move forward, you’ll begin what’s known as a Fostering assessment. This is a detailed but supportive process led by one of our experienced social workers. It looks at your background, relationships, health, and personal qualities to make sure you’re well suited to fostering. You’ll be fully involved throughout.

What is a Fostering assessment?
The Fostering assessment is a written report created by your assessing social worker. It captures your life experiences, skills, and reasons for wanting to foster, along with insights into your home and family life. You’ll review this report before it’s presented to the fostering panel, so you’ll always know exactly what’s included.
Who are the fostering panel?
The fostering panel is an independent group of professionals with expertise in social work, education, and child care. They review your assessment, ask a few friendly questions, and make a recommendation about your approval. It’s a supportive process designed to confirm that you’re ready to start fostering confidently.
How long does the process take?
On average, the full fostering process takes around four to six months. This includes the home visits, assessment, training, and panel approval. Timings can vary depending on your availability, but we’ll always keep you informed and supported at each stage. For many carers, the journey is just as rewarding as the outcome.
What training is included during the process?
Before you’re approved, you’ll attend the Skills to Foster training course. This essential course helps you understand what fostering involves and gives you practical tools to prepare for your first placement. You’ll also meet other prospective carers and have the chance to ask questions in a relaxed, supportive environment.

What happens after I’m approved?
Once approved, you’ll become an official foster carer and be assigned a dedicated supervising social worker. They’ll work with you to identify suitable placements and provide guidance on next steps. Many carers receive their first placement within a few weeks, but we’ll only match you with a child when the fit feels right.
What ongoing support will I receive?
Your support doesn’t stop once you’re approved. You’ll have 24/7 access to advice, regular contact with your supervising social worker, and opportunities for ongoing training. We’ll always be here to help you feel confident, connected, and capable throughout every stage of your fostering journey.
