What is a fostering allowance and how is it calculated?

The Fostering Allowance in Simple Terms

A fostering allowance is a weekly payment made to foster carers for every week a child lives with them. It has two parts: money to cover the cost of caring for the child, and a fee that recognises the skills, time and commitment you bring as a foster carer.

The allowance is calculated using a few key factors. The type of placement matters, as short-term, long-term, emergency, respite and specialist placements are paid differently. The age of the child matters, as older children usually cost more to care for. The child's needs also matter, and children with complex needs usually attract a higher rate.

Before a child arrives, Match Foster Care explains exactly which rate applies, so you know what you will receive. Payments are made regularly, and our transparent approach means there are no hidden conditions.
