What Your Fostering Allowance Covers
The fostering allowance is there to cover the cost of caring for a child as if they were part of your own family. That includes the everyday essentials, such as food, clothing, shoes, toiletries and a share of household bills like heating and electricity.
It also covers the things that help a child enjoy a full and happy childhood. This might be pocket money, school uniform and equipment, travel to school and contact visits, hobbies, clubs, days out and gifts. Saving a little for the child's future is also a lovely way to use part of the allowance.
The amount you receive reflects the age and needs of the child, as older children and children with additional needs usually cost more to care for. Extra payments may be available for special occasions such as birthdays, festivals and holidays.
Your supervising social worker can help you plan how to use the allowance in the child's best interests. Our team will also give you a clear breakdown before a placement starts, so you know what is covered.
