How do fostering allowance rates vary based on the age and needs of the child?

Allowances That Reflect Each Child

Every child is different, and so is the cost of caring for them. That is why fostering allowance rates are not the same for every placement. The two biggest factors are the age of the child and the level of their needs.

As children grow, their costs grow too. A teenager needs more food, more expensive clothing, a mobile phone, travel to school and money for hobbies and social activities. A baby or toddler has different costs, such as nappies, equipment and childcare. Allowance rates are set in age bands to reflect these changing day-to-day costs.

A child's needs also affect the allowance. Children with complex emotional or behavioural needs, disabilities or health conditions may need more of your time and care. Placements like these usually attract a higher allowance, along with extra training and support for you.

Before a placement starts, we will tell you clearly what allowance applies to that child, so you can plan with confidence. You will also have the backing of our multi-disciplinary team, including our therapeutic practitioner, registered nurse and education workers, whatever the age or needs of the child in your care.
