How can I effectively communicate with my foster children to provide the best support?

Building Trust Through Communication

Good communication is at the heart of fostering. Many children in foster care have had difficult experiences and may find it hard to trust adults at first, so patience and consistency are key.

Try to listen more than you talk, and let children share at their own pace. Simple things, like chatting during a car journey or while cooking together, can feel less pressured than a face-to-face conversation. Be honest, keep your promises, and let them know it is okay to have big feelings.

It is just as important to keep talking with your own children. Make time to check in with them, listen to their worries and celebrate the positive things fostering brings. Family meetings can help everyone feel included in decisions.

Your supervising social worker and our therapeutic practitioner can offer advice tailored to the children in your home, and our training covers communication, trauma and attachment in more detail.
