Overview of Match Foster Care’s Residential Trip
Every year at Match Foster Care, we take a group of teenagers—both birth children and fostered children—on a residential trip to either Malvern or Stoke (we like to mix it up!). It’s an amazing opportunity for young people to build independence, confidence, and lifelong friendships while having an unforgettable experience filled with fun and adventure.
Preparation for Independence
In the weeks leading up to the trip, we work with the kids on key independent living skills such as:
- Budgeting
- Shopping
- Cooking
These skills are put to the test during the residential, where teens prepare meals for the group based on a budget, shopping lists, and menu plans. The meals they create often impress, showcasing their newfound culinary skills.
Fun and Adventure Activities
The residential experience is not solely focused on skill-building; it also includes a variety of fun activities over two nights. Some highlights include:
- Axe Throwing
- Climbing
- Raft Building
- Canoeing
Nighttime activities enhance bonding experiences, such as gathering around a bonfire, taking night walks, and sharing stories that grow funnier with each telling. These shared experiences often lead to unexpected friendships, particularly during team challenges like raft building.
Building Connections Among Foster Children
These residentials are so much more than just a trip away. They help fostered children connect with other fostered children in a positive, supportive environment where they don’t feel “different.” They also create a space for all the kids to form deep friendships that often last for years, no matter how far apart they live. When they do meet up again, it’s like no time has passed.
Strengthening Relationships with Staff
For our team, it’s an incredible chance to strengthen relationships with the children, too. The bonds formed during these trips can make a huge difference when a child is experiencing difficulties at home or school—they know they can trust us. And while the staff might survive on very little sleep (we’re still recovering from last year’s midnight giggles), the value of these trips is undeniable.
Benefits for Foster Parents
Foster parents also enjoy peace of mind while their children participate in these enriching activities. They can rest assured knowing their children are learning valuable life skills and being cared for by trusted staff.
More Than Just a Trip
These residential experiences have become an integral part of what defines Match Foster Care. They promote independence, resilience, and connection, all while ensuring that participants have a fantastic time. Ultimately, Match Foster Care is committed not just to building skills but also to creating lasting memories for all involved.
