Matching Children With Carers

At Match Foster Care, our name says it all — matching is at the heart of what we do. Every child is unique, with their own personality, background, and needs. Likewise, every foster carer has their own strengths, experiences, and family dynamic. The goal is to bring the two together in a way that helps both thrive.

We take great care to ensure every match feels right. By understanding both the child’s situation and the carer’s abilities, we build placements that are positive, supportive, and lasting.

How are children matched with carers?

Matching is a careful, collaborative process. We look at the child’s age, personality, health, education, and emotional needs alongside your home environment, experience, and preferences. This helps us make a thoughtful match that feels right for everyone involved.

What information will I receive before a placement?

You’ll receive as much information as possible about the child before any placement begins. This includes their background, education, routines, and any specific support needs. We want you to feel prepared and confident before welcoming them into your home.

Do I get to meet the child before they move in?

Whenever possible, yes. For planned or long-term placements, introductions are arranged to help both you and the child get to know each other gradually. This can make the first few days easier and help build trust from the start.

What factors are considered when making a match?

We consider everything that might influence how well a child settles — from their personality and cultural background to their school, location, and family connections. Your own family life, interests, and experience are equally important in creating the best possible fit.

Can I say no to a foster placement?

Yes. You’ll always have the final say on whether to accept a placement. We’ll never pressure you into taking a child who doesn’t feel like the right match. It’s important that both you and the child feel comfortable, safe, and supported.

How are sibling groups matched?

Keeping siblings together is a priority wherever possible. If your home and approval terms allow, we’ll discuss sibling placements and the additional support available. Many carers find caring for siblings incredibly rewarding, as it helps maintain family bonds.

What happens if a foster placement isn’t working out?

If challenges arise, you’ll never be left to handle them alone. We’ll step in quickly to offer advice, extra training, or respite support. In some cases, if a foster placement must end, we’ll manage the transition sensitively to minimise disruption for the child.

How long do foster placements usually last?

Foster placement lengths vary. Some are short-term while long-term fostering can last until the child reaches adulthood. Our focus is always on stability — giving children the consistency and care they need, no matter how long they stay.

What role does my Supervising Social Worker play?

Your Supervising Social Worker is a key part of the matching process. They’ll help assess potential placements, make sure you have all the information you need, and stay in touch throughout to ensure things are going smoothly for both you and the child.

Why is the matching process so important?

A good match sets the foundation for success. When a child feels understood and a carer feels prepared, the relationship grows stronger, leading to happier, more stable outcomes. At Match Foster Care, we believe that thoughtful matching helps transform lives for the better.
