Training & Development

At Match Foster Care, we believe that confident, knowledgeable carers make the greatest difference in children’s lives. That’s why training and development are at the heart of everything we do. Whether you’re new to fostering or have years of experience, we’ll help you grow, learn, and feel fully supported throughout your journey.

Our training isn’t about tests or ticking boxes — it’s about building your skills, resilience, and confidence so you can offer the very best care to every child you welcome into your home.

What Training Do I Need Before Becoming A Foster Carer?

Before approval, you’ll complete a pre-approval course called Skills to Foster. This introduction to fostering gives you a realistic understanding of what to expect, covering topics such as child development, teamwork, communication, and managing behaviour. It’s designed to prepare you and help you decide if fostering is right for you.

What is the “Skills to Foster” course?

Skills to Foster is an interactive and welcoming programme that brings together people who are considering fostering. You’ll learn about children’s needs, trauma, and how to provide safe, nurturing care. Sessions are led by experienced staff and foster carers, and there’s plenty of time to ask questions and share experiences.

Is the training free?

Yes, all training provided by Match Foster Care is completely free. We see it as an essential investment in you — not an extra cost. From the moment you apply, every session, workshop, and course is designed to help you feel confident and capable without any financial pressure.

Do I need formal qualifications to foster?

No formal qualifications are required. What matters most is your willingness to learn and your ability to provide a stable, caring environment. Our training will equip you with all the knowledge and practical skills needed to meet a child’s emotional and physical needs.

How is the training delivered?

Training is flexible to suit your lifestyle. We offer a mix of in-person sessions at local venues across the Midlands and online courses you can complete from home. Many carers appreciate the blend of interactive workshops and digital learning that fits around work and family commitments.

What kind of ongoing training is offered?

Once you’re approved, your development continues through regular workshops and courses on subjects like safeguarding, attachment, trauma-informed care, cultural awareness, and supporting education. These sessions help you adapt to different situations and build confidence as your experience grows.

Can I specialise in a particular area of fostering?

Yes. As you gain experience, you can choose to specialise in areas such as therapeutic fostering, parent-and-child placements, or caring for teenagers. We’ll provide targeted training and mentoring to help you develop your expertise and feel supported in more complex placements.

Are there recognised qualifications for foster carers?

Once approved, carers go on to complete the Training, Support and Development Standards (TSDS) — a nationally recognised framework for foster carers. This qualification showcases your professionalism and can open doors to specialist opportunities within fostering.

How do I track my learning and progress?

Your Supervising Social Worker will help you create a personal development portfolio. This record highlights the training you’ve completed, the skills you’ve gained, and areas for future learning. It’s a great way to see how far you’ve come and demonstrate your ongoing commitment to fostering.

Why is training so important in fostering?

Fostering is deeply rewarding, but it can also be challenging. Training gives you the tools to respond with confidence and compassion, helping children feel secure and understood. It also strengthens the trust between carers, agencies, and local authorities — ensuring every placement has the best chance to succeed.
