Why Match Foster Care Welcomes Foster Carers from LGBTQ+ Backgrounds
At Match Foster Care, we believe that fostering is about compassion, commitment, and the ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children. We prioritise these qualities over gender, sexual orientation, or background, welcoming foster carers from all walks of life, including those from LGBTQ+ backgrounds.
Embracing Diversity in Fostering
We are proud to welcome foster carers from all walks of life, including those from LGBTQ+ backgrounds. We understand that children and young people in care come from diverse communities, and we are committed to building a fostering community that reflects this diversity. By recruiting foster carers from a wide range of backgrounds, we can better meet the unique needs of every child, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and supported.
Unique Qualities of LGBTQ+ Foster Carers
Your ability to make a difference in a childโs life comes from who you are as a personโyour empathy, resilience, and capacity to provide a loving and stable home.
Empathy: Many LGBTQ+ individuals have navigated diverse life experiences, which fosters a profound sense of empathy towards children facing challenges.
Advocacy: LGBTQ+ foster carers are well-positioned to advocate for the specific needs of LGBTQ+ youth in care, empowering them to embrace their identities.
Resilience: The strength developed through overcoming societal challenges translates into valuable life skills for fostering.
At Match, we celebrate individuality and believe that diversity strengthens the fostering experience, enriching the lives of both carers and children.
What Are The Requirements To Be A Foster Parent?
If you are over the age of 21, have a spare room, and have the right to live and work in the UK, then you may apply to be a foster parent.
Whether or not your application is successful will be based on if you can provide a loving, stable home to a child in your care. Your sexual orientation, gender or ethnicity will not be part of the decision and will not impact whether you are approved to be a foster parent.
Is Fostering An LGBT+ Child Or A Child Of A Different Ethnicity More Challenging?
All foster children are unique. As with any other child, if you are fostering an individual who is part of the LGBT+ community or a different ethnicity to your own, then you must meet their personal needs.
Addressing a foster childโs individual needs will always be part of the support and training for foster parents. For instance, children of a certain ethnicity may have particular hair or skin care routines that you need to be aware of. You may also need to ensure that children are connected to their culture and the community that they are part of.
